U.N. Plans 70th Anniversary Celebrations in 2015

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 21 2013 (IPS) - As the United Nations plans to celebrate its 70th anniversary next year, the Department of Public Information (DPI) will be exhibiting some of the organization’s rarely-seen and wide-encompassing collection of films and videos, campaign posters and photographs.

This exhibition, organized by the Gabarron Foundation and the United Nations, through DPI, will celebrate the UN through its vast iconographic archives which will travel the world with exhibitions in different museum and art centers.

A UN press release says the exhibition, titled UNEARTH,  will be  the broadest ever assembled about the UN’s own perspective in key moments of recent history, encompassing the organization’s seven decades life span.

It will show, reflect and comment on the UN’s journey as the world and humankind changed dramatically during the past 68 years and it will emphasize some the most important aspects of its main activities, including human rights, economic development, humanitarian assistance, peace and security.

The exhibition will not only showcase the achievements of UN but will also highlight the challenges facing the international organization in the next decades. A vast array of UN officials, Goodwill and Peace Ambassadors, intellectuals, artists, journalists and historians will dig into the UN history in order to present the general visitor the organization’s past, present and future of this unique and vital institution.

UNEARTH will also consist of an exclusive photography exhibition and a wide range of film and video selections. The exhibition can be explored throughout the galleries but also on an individualized experience through interactive content that visitor can immerse into the vast and rich iconographic historical materials.

As part of the event, there will be four special panel discussions with several luminaries debating each of the four UN pillars during the two months of the exhibition. The exhibition will also include special audio historical recordings of concerts performed by some of the world’s greatest musicians and conductors.
