See You Later, Porto Alegre!
The great Tower of Babel of the WSF says "goodbye" to Porto Alegre, but it is really just "see you soon", since in 2004 the global social movements will be meeting again in India.

Chomsky, Roy Shred Bush and Co.
Two minds – a North American and a South Asian – combined to serve an intellectual treat to the thousands of charged activists who had packed the cavernous Gigantinho stadium Sunday.

Future of the WSF - Smaller Is Better
The third edition of the World Social Forum represents an important moment in the movement's history, whether for the multitude of participants, the decision to hold the next meeting on another continent, or for the institutionalisation of the parallel forums accompanying it.

Social Entrepreneurs
Leaders for the 21st Century
Thirty-three years ago, I founded the World Economic Forum with the purpose of building a global community of business leaders that search for joint solutions to challenges at the macroeconomic and geopolitical level. As the Forum evolved over the years, we invited political and academic leaders as well as representatives from the media to contribute to our discussions and widen our perspectives.

Marina Silva - The exception That Wants to Become the Rule
Brazil's Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, recognises she is an exception. But she believes she has arrived at her current post because of the opportunities she has been given, and not only because of her abilities.

Countries Fail to Make ICC a Priority
Despite the many benefits the International Criminal Court (ICC) can provide for the development of international law and the democratisation of relationships between big and small countries, its application worldwide is being hamstrung because of US pressure and reluctant governments.

To Reform UN, Get Folk Involved
The WSF as the UN’s Second Chamber?

If you want to change the world, start with the United Nations. And to change the world body, maybe what is needed is a second chamber of elected representatives from each country.

Annan Calls for Engagement
When humankind is better equipped than ever to tackle the plight of the poor, the spread of AIDS, the destruction of the environment, inequality and barriers to a fair trade, those issues may “fall victim to short attention spans or narrow notions of national interest,” United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan said in a message to the Forum yesterday.

A ONU sob fogo cruzado

Feb. 15 is D- (Demonstration) Day
The Global Resistance Movement has designated Feb. 15 as the day for another round of worldwide demonstrations against the war on Iraq.

Creditors Failing the World’s Poor: Jubilee
Two years after the millennium deadline set by Jubilee 2000, the campaign founders are accusing creditors of reneging on their commitment to cancel the debts of the world's poorest nations.

Nepal's Dilemma
Nepal is a classic case of neoliberal economic policies playing havoc with the social fabric of a poor developing country, says the Nepali delegation to the WSF, arguing that it is only worsening the vicious circle that is manifest in the conflict between the government and a Maoist group.

Sebastião Salgado, Roberto Savio, Susan George, Hugo Chávez, José María Figueres, Ignácio Saiz, Eveline Hertkens, Ann Pettifor, Martin Khor, Luiz Inácio da Silva, Percy Schmeiser, Eliezer Pachero, Supachai Panitchpakdi, Mário Soares, João Pedro Stedile, Sherif Herata,

Open Markets or Open Plunder?
Once upon a time, empires were built through direct conquest. Armies plundered their way across continents, claiming lands and resources for king and country, justifying their acts as ''bringing the light of civilisation to the savages of dark continents''.

Davos Club Snubs Africa
Africa-NEPAD
With only a handful of African officials attending and no African issues on the agenda, the World Economic Forum appears to be ignoring 13 percent of the world's population.

Powell, Saddam, and the Future of the Iraqi People and Oil
Amidst rumours that the Davos Forum is introducing Iraqi opposition leaders to corporate executives for some kind of secret oil deal, the US plans for war to go ahead regardless of European resistance, saying it has contingency plans for a possible Iraqui humanitarian crisis.

RIGHTING GLOBAL WRONGS
Complacency is No Virtue

A sigh of relief as this year’s pilgrimage comes to an end. Full of inspiration and hope many hail the WSF process as a "victory of the people". But complacency is no virtue.

NGOs the UN’s Sweatshop?
Pat Mooney was blunt in his summation of what ails civil society. It is a victim of the Stockholm Syndrome, he said.

It’s All in the Numbers
In spite of the restrictive policies on the accumulation and storage of data in many countries of the Middle East, more Arab nations contributed to this year’s Social Summit report than last year’s.

WSF Can Nourish ILO Commission
The international community needs to follow the questions being raised at the WSF to nourish its work, says Aminata Traore, an author and member of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation.
