Mario Soares
'War may spark a great crisis of capitalism'

The world sits on the edge of the abyss for two reasons: the war Washington is threatening against Iraq and the economic recession that is a symptom of the crisis of capitalism, says Mario Soares, European MP and former Portuguese president.

ICC a Pesky Itch under US Warhorse's Saddle
Never before has an NGO got so far in influencing international law. And now, the Coalition for the International Criminal Court (CICC) is in Porto Alegre to get civil society's support "so we can go to countries like Japan or the United States" and put some pressure on them to ratify the Rome Statute, William Pace, governor at the CICC, told TerraViva.

Unions Speak
Wanted: Role in Globalisation

The global economy needs enforceable rules and procedures, because left to its own devices the market is not going to produce optimal results for its people, says Guy Ryder, general-secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU).

Cancun Will Not be a Party for the Free Traders
Cancun, that resort city on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, has been put on notice: expect rough times in September, when the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) ministerial meeting kicks off.

Point - Counterpoint
On Globalisation

Whose Black?
Brazil’s Amazing Skin-Shedding Trick
Being white means not being black right? Not in Brazil. Here you can be white if you are rich, like soccer icon Pele. You can be black if you are white and poor. To be more precise, you can also call yourself a“little bit black or a little bit white“, depending on how deep your skin is hued.

U.S. Anti-War Movement – PRESENT!
More Americans became casualties in the Gulf War than in the Vietnam War or in World War II. True or False?

Powerful without Power?
The first Porto Alegre in 2001 dealt mainly with analysing the world situation, the second in 2002 stressed proposals for changing that situation and the third, right now, is supposed to be about devising strategies to achieve those changes.

Brazilian President Urges Davos-Porto Alegre Cooperation
‘Tough Fight’ Ahead - Lula

DAVOS, Switzerland – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva talked tough here, but noted there was room for communication between the guardians of corporate globalisation and their rivals from the social justice movement.

WEF President Klaus Schwab
'We are the same'

Economic guru sees semblance of purpose for the economic and social gatherings but claims the World Economic Forum's model is more practical.

RIGHTING GLOBAL WRONGS
No Simple Solutions
Fighting my way through the masses at PUC and Gigantinho in the scorching heat may be exhausting, but it is nowhere as overwhelming as the joint struggle ahead for the reform of the international financial and trade institutions.

A Pandora’s Box Opens on the Fields
Dorivaldo Pereira de Sa can grow food on just four hectares of his 51-hectare farm in Mirandiba village in Pernambuco province in Brazil, and that has everything to do with his presence at the World Social Forum.

They’re Some Other Religious Nuts Out There
Christian and Jewish Fundamentalism Also Threaten Peace, Say Activists
U.S., Israel as Much a Threat to Peace as Islam

The threat from religious fundamentalists is not merely coming from the Islamic world, it is also emanating from the United States and Israel. The strongest supporters of the Bush administration in the United States are Christian fundamentalists who believe in the biblical prophecy that Jerusalem needs to come completely under Israeli occupation for the second coming of Christ.

Global Media
"It's Time to Create a Fifth Power"
"Media for a long time was the resource of the citizenry, known as the fourth power, the power to oppose decisions of the government that would have harmful effects on people. The fourth power no longer has this power," says Ignacio Ramonet, editor of Le Monde Diplomatique and communications professor at the University of Paris

Lula Sneaks in the Back Door
Political theatre buffs were served an early afternoon treat Sunday at the main WSF building at PUC. The matinee came with drums and flags, bodies on the floor symbolising death, but then came the main act, the giant face and booming voice of a man of these times
