Feb. 15 is D- (Demonstration) Day

By Zarina Geloo

The Global Resistance Movement has designated Feb. 15 as the day for another round of worldwide demonstrations against the war on Iraq.

Nancy Lindisfarne said demonstrations were being planned in 30 countries to coincide with the staging of the G-8 summit in Evian, France in June, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) summit in Cancun, Mexico in September and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), in Miami, United States in October.

She said the US intention to launch a war on Iraq was a great threat to the world. “We are calling on all social movements to support, participate in and organise worldwide protests on Feb. 15 against the war on Iraq.”

During the Jun. 1-3, G-8 summit the social movement will stage its own alternative summit and a huge international demonstration. During the FTAA and WTO meetings, the movement will organise huge demonstrations at the meeting sites.

She said the social movement was meeting at the WSF in the shadow of a global crisis. Neo liberalisation itself was in crisis, the threat of global recession was ever present, and social and economic inequalities were growing. Biodiversity, air, water, forest, soil and sea were for sale, threatening the common future.

Multinationals were using the WTO, the FTAA and a proliferation of regional and bilateral trade agreements to promote their interests, dominate and control economies and impose a development model which impoverished people, she added.

“We will campaign to stop and reverse the liberalisation of agriculture, water, energy, public service and investment, and to reassert people’s sovereignty over their societies, their resources, culture, knowledge and economies.”
