Mario Osava, or Chizuo Osava, his given name, is a Brazilian journalist of Japanese descent who has been the IPS correspondent in Brazil since the end of the 1980s. Previously he had worked for IPS and for the magazine Cuadernos del Tercer Mundo in Portugal (1978-1979), and for the economic section of the newspaper O Globo in Rio de Janeiro after his return from exile.
Mario covers events and trends throughout Brazil, from large infrastructure projects to the situation of indigenous people and poor rural women, and the deterioration of critical ecosystems such as the Amazon, in his tireless travels across a country of continental dimensions. Mario also brings articulate and original analysis of the institutional crisis into which corruption has plunged Brazil, and has been crucial in IPS coverage of several UN conferences and the World Social Forum. For his work, he received the Richard de Zoysa award from IPS, and the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) award, and was twice a finalist for the Embratel award in Brazil.
