Carrying her baby on her back, an Aini woman, her face tanned but bright, does weeding work in a 67-hectare fruit plantation. It is my favourite — the withered trees in the background, which represent the opium past of this special zone, contrast against the apple shoots in the field, which represent the future.

A local peddler zooms through the streets of Mongla.

Cruising along the Mekong

A Thai policeman stands guard with an M-16 rifle at Sop Ruak village (Chiang Saen in Thai province of Chiang Rai). This is at the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet.

At sunset, Lao boys frolic by the Mekong river. The river widens going south from Luang Prabang, but shipping remains difficult as yet.
