Many in the international community believe that a fundamental, multi-polar, cross-border debate on development is needed, one in which a key challenge will be to find a new and broader meaning for this concept. A prominent example is the debate on the future of Europe's role, the multi-annual 'European Development Cooperation to 2010' programme EDC 2010. Launched by the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) last year, it has now turned into a long-term programme in partnership with the Society for International Development Europe (SID) and Europe's Forum on International Cooperation (Euforic), which builds on the past accomplishments of the individual organisations. The September 27-28 Conference in The Hague is a milestone of the EDC 2010 programme.
