By IPS Correspondents and - -
BUENOS AIRES, Mar 2 2009 (IPS)

Tired of putting up with a nearby dumpster, the communities of Bouwer and Potrero del Estado, in the central Argentine province of Cordoba, filed a complaint against the provincial capital for diverting its garbage to that site. In December, residents of the two localities reported the Cordoba authorities for sending a daily 2,000 tons of garbage their way. Now the municipality of Jesús María announced that it will use the same destination for some 700 tons of garbage a month.

“It’s easier for them to keep sending their garbage where a treatment plant should be built. We’re tired of having to lock our kids up and spray air freshener to bear the smell,” Mónica Rescala, a neighbor of Potrero del Estado told Tierramérica.

According to the Environmental Defense Foundation, these two areas, which are home to 2,500 people, are among the most polluted spots in the country.
