By IPS Correspondents and - -
TEGUCIGALPA, May 25 2009 (IPS)

Residents, environmentalists and civil society groups will ask the Organization of American States to intercede on their behalf with the governments of Mexico and Honduras to relocate installations of Gas del Caribe, a Mexican firm that has caused damage in the Honduran region of Omoa. The initiative is entrusted to the Greater Alliance of Society, which will bring the petition in June, when the OAS has scheduled its annual assembly in Honduras.

“We’ve grown tired of exhausting all our legal options. A government study indicates that Gas del Caribe is polluting the Honduran coastal ecosystem, but nobody will pay attention,” Alliance member Massimo Parisi told Tierramérica.

Gas del Caribe is accused of selling cheap, dangerous and volatile fuel, better suited for colder climates than the tropical Omoa.
