By IPS Correspondents and - -
SANTIAGO, Aug 10 2009 (IPS)

The Chilean government revealed the main characteristics of its bill for regulating the concentration of particulate matter in the air, with a diameter of less than 2.4 micrometers (one-millionth of a meter), the most harmful to human health. By 2012, the maximum allowed will be 25 micrograms of such matter per cubic meter of air, reduced to 20 micrograms in 2022 and 10 micrograms in 2032. The current average in the Chilean capital is 32 micrograms per cubic meter.

“We have awaited this announcement for more than 10 years. Even though it is late, the government's action is appreciated,” activist Paola Vasconi, of the non-governmental Terram Foundation, told Tierramérica.

The standard will be up for public hearings in October. It is expected to be enacted in January 2010.
