An emulsion of castor oil can be used as a substitute for petroleum-based oils in the production of metal tools, molds and components for machines, according to a study by experts at the University of São Paulo. The new product is “biodegradable and from a renewable source, unlike crude oil, which is the basis of the products being used today,” chemical engineer Salete Martins Alves told Tierramérica.

The preliminary assessments indicate that the castor oil emulsion is a little more expensive than the conventional emulsions, but is being well received because it produces the identical results with less harm to the environment. It also opens a new market for the castor oil produced by small farmers.
