By IPS Correspondents and - -
TEGUCIGALPA, Dec 14 2009 (IPS)

A coalition of environmental defense groups in the northern region of Omoa will file a case in January 2010 against the Government of Honduras for failing to relocated the Mexican transnational Gas del Caribe, which is polluting the coastal zone. With the government's refusal, “after five years of fighting, we have no other choice but to turn to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to take the case to the Inter-American Court, because we have exhausted all domestic resources,” Massimo Parisi, coordinator of the Great Alliance for Omoa, told Tierramérica.

Official reports underscore the health and environmental threats posed by the natural gas company, which is why it recommended relocation, but according to Also Santos, Special Prosecutor for the Environment, it seems “nobody wants to take this case seriously.” Santos believes that the international case is appropriate because the company is causing serious damages to marine and coastal resources.
