The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will create a fund of one billion dollars for Honduras for the next four years, announced Carmelo Rizzo, the Honduran representative to that agency. The funds come from donors including the United States, Canada and the European Union, Rizzo told Tierramérica. The purpose is to meet the needs of some five million Hondurans — out of a total population of eight million — who face serious problems related to nutrition.

In the Honduran west and south, FAO is promoting successful food security programs among women and indigenous peoples, whose experiences it hopes to replicate in other parts of the country.
