By IPS Correspondents and - -
BUENOS AIRES, Apr 16 2011 (IPS)

A network of environmental organisations in Argentina has launched a campaign to get electricity users to tell their service providers that they do not want electricity generated by nuclear power. “Our goal is to highlight the fact that we as citizens do not want nuclear energy, because it is costly, unsafe, unsustainable and dirty,” activist Silvana Buján of Bios Argentina told Tierramérica.

“We have the right to choose what to buy to provide us with light. How can this be handled, technically? It’s not something citizens can do. It is a technical and political matter handled by those who make decisions for us, and sometimes bad decisions,” commented Buján.

Seven percent of electricity in Argentina is currently supplied by two nuclear power plants, and a third plant is scheduled to open in September.
