By IPS Correspondents and - -
TEGUCIGALPA, Oct 10 2011 (IPS)

The first wind power plant in Honduras will enter into operation in late October, following successful testing carried out in September. Developed by Globeleq Mesoamerica Energy, a subsidiary of UK-based transnational Globeleq, the wind park encompasses 67 wind turbines mounted on 80-meter-high towers that will generate a total of 102 MW of electricity.

The park is located in Cerro de Hula, 24 kilometers south of Tegucigalpa, and will initially supply electricity for some 100,000 households, Roberto Martínez, general manager of the state-owned National Electric Power Company, told Tierramérica.

During preliminary tests, 60 MW of electricity were produced, but the park will enter into full operation in late October. The project involved an investment of approximately 270 million dollars and is the first of its kind in Central America.
