By IPS Correspondents and - -
BUENOS AIRES, Dec 12 2011 (IPS)

A campaign was launched at the beginning of December in Buenos Aires to raise the funds needed to expropriate a private landholding in northeastern Argentina and turn it into a national park. La Fidelidad, as the estate is known, covers 150,000 hectares of well-preserved subtropical dry forest in the province of Chaco and another 100,000 hectares in the neighboring province of Formosa, and is home to wild animals such as jaguars (Panthera onca), tapirs (Tapiridae) and giant armadillos (Priodontes maximus), among others.

The campaign launched in Buenos Aires by the organization Banco de Bosques (Forest Bank) is aimed at getting 250,000 people involved in fundraising activities. Each of these volunteers will be the "guardian" of one hectare of La Fidelidad.

Emiliano Ezcurra, the director of the organization, told Tierramérica that the expropriation of the property is being studied in the provincial legislature of Chaco. The National Parks Administration has made an advance contribution to the fund for the acquisition of the property, which has been assessed at close to 50 million dollars for the section that falls within Chaco alone.
