The government of Honduras is studying ways to promote the generation of biogas from organic waste, to reduce the country’s dependence on imported oil. The Small Grants Programme of the United Nations Development Programme has systematized a number of biogas generation experiences in the region of Colón, on the Caribbean coast of Honduras.

Small-scale experiences in the Atlantic region “are motivating us to exploit this alternative as part of our energy-saving measures for the medium term, in addition to the fact that it contributes to protecting the environment,” Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Juan José Cruz told Tierramérica.

Cruz is a member of a government committee that is exploring options for the generation of other types of energy to help reduce the country’s oil bill, estimated at 204 million dollars a month, with most of it spent on fuel imports.
