By IPS Correspondents and - -
TEGUCIGALPA, Aug 13 2012 (IPS)

The municipality of Marcovia, in southern Honduras, will be the first in the country with a plant for treating and recycling solid wastes, which will enter into operation in September. The recycled material will be sold to companies in El Salvador and Guatemala. With a cost of half a million dollars, the new plant will benefit some 47,000 people without garbage collection service in Marcovia, located in the southern Honduran department of Choluteca, the municipality’s mayor, Nahúm Cálix, told Tierramérica.

Marcovia is one of the main tourism areas on the Pacific Ocean coast, thanks to its beaches, mangrove forests, and Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) conservation. The municipality produces around 19 tons of garbage a day.
