Health authorities in Honduras have attributed the upsurge in dengue to weather variations, such as unusually high daytime temperatures and heavy rain at night, in addition to the accumulation of garbage in different neighborhoods. Abrupt changes in temperature foster the formation of sources of infection that facilitate the propagation of the mosquito that transmits dengue, Mario Nájera, the director of health promotion at the Ministry of Health, told Tierramérica.

More than 4,000 cases of dengue have been recorded so far, including 13 cases of hemorrhagic dengue, a potentially lethal strain of the disease.
