Civil society organizations in Mexico City are promoting the right to mobility, which involves social, economic and environmental policies. “Mobility is an issue that needs greater emphasis and improved quality,” the director for Latin America of the non-governmental Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, Bernardo Baranda, told Tierramérica.

“There should be stricter rules that discourage the use of cars and make parking more expensive, as well as more public transportation options,” he added.

In September, the organization will present a series of recommendations to the city government and to the Federal District Human Rights Commission, a government agency, which will publish a report on the state of mobility at the end of the year.

In the Mexican capital, home to almost nine million people, roughly 22 million local trips are made daily, 16 million of them on public transportation.
