By IPS Correspondents and - -
SANTIAGO, Oct 29 2012 (IPS)

An innovative environmental education campaign in Chile seeks to motivate the public to adopt sustainable practices, through 15 “microprograms” that raise awareness and provide everyday solutions for a range of environmental problems. The campaign, called “Save the Earth, the Solution Lies With You”, is being taken to schools and municipalities throughout the country, and is targeted to children and adults of all ages and social classes.

“The idea is to teach the public about the 15 main environmental problems in the world today and solutions to confront them. We want to show people that taking care of the planet is much easier than they think it is,” Cristián Campos, director of Neurona Group, told Tierramérica.

Among the main problems addressed are the scarcity of water, high energy consumption, waste disposal, and pollution caused by household waste.

The project was launched with the sponsorship of private companies, such as Neurona Group, but it is now also backed by the National Fund for Regional Development.
