Honduran and international institutions have joined forces to construct a center aimed at preserving endangered flora and fauna, such as the jaguar, in the northeastern department of Olancho. The initiative is supported by the governmental Forest Conservation Institute (ICF), the National Autonomous University of Honduras, and the Humane Society International.

The goal of the center is to recover the diversity of flora and fauna in Olancho, one of the departments that have suffered the highest levels of deforestation in this Central American country.

The facility under construction will house a center for the monitoring, protection and conservation of endangered species, biologist Roberto Downing of the ICF told Tierramérica.

The habitat of the majority of these species is in the corridor formed by the Plátano River Biosphere, which joins Olancho with El Paraíso in the southeast and the jungle region of La Mosquitia or Gracias a Dios on the Atlantic coast.
