When New York city Mayor Bill de Blasio met the first female Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo on Friday, they realized they share a common political streak:  a progressive mindset.

“We have the same platform in a couple of ways,” de Blasio told reporters. “It’s really energizing, and we want to compare our experiences.”

The politically liberal de Blasio took office in January while Hidalgo, described as a member of the French Socialist Party, assumed duties in April.

Addressing a City Hall press conference, the New York city mayor identified some of the common goals to include affordable housing, early childhood education and environmental sustainability.

As two vibrant cosmopolitan capitals, Paris and New York city have so much in common, he added.

Like de Blasio, Hidalgo is planning to build thousands of houses for middle class and lower middle class families.  And like the New York city mayor, she wants to aggressively seek investments from the private sector to attain her objectives.

“I just honor and commend Mayor Hidalgo for being a voice of inclusion and tolerance in a multicultural society,” de Blasio said.

On the question of hosting the Olympics in 2024, Hidalgo said she has not made a final decision as to whether or not she will pursue that proposal.

But last week de Blasio ruled out New York city as the venue for the 2024 Olympics.

Meanwhile, there have been published reports that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is likely to study a proposal favouring the Olympics.

Although the US Olympic Committee picked New York as the country’s nominee for the 2012 summer games, London emerged the final winner.

The games have never been hosted by New York.
