Tharanga Yakupitiyage

Working out of the United Nations Headquarters in New York, she writes a range of stories on domestic and international human rights and development issues, including conflict-related migration, climate change, and global press freedom. Tharanga’s diverse portfolio has provided her with a nuanced understanding of human rights, and thus a fresh way to tell the very pressing stories of today’s world. Tharanga has examined larger trends of extractive industries and their impacts on vulnerable communities, and expanded the sometimes narrow geographical understanding of refugees by reporting on lesser known refugee issues in Southeast Asia, West Africa and Central America.

Tharanga started writing for IPS in August 2015 after completing a Master’s Degree in Public Policy at American University.
