Ecobreves – MEXICO: Wanted: Logging Assassins

MEXICO CITY, Aug 18 2007 (IPS) - A Mexican peasant farming family, whose loved one was murdered by loggers in May, lives under death threats and the authorities are doing little about it, say activists. “The risk the Zamora Baldomero family is facing has increased since two of the four murders who killed Aldo were arrested in early August, which is why we have requested the intervention of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights,” Héctor Magallón, of Greenpeace Mexico, told Tierramérica.

Aldo Zamora was murdered on May 15 in retaliation against his family, which opposes logging of the San Juan Atzingo forests, in Mexico state. The area holds national park status, but timber trafficking groups operate there.

Following the murder, a police patrol keeps watch on the Zamora house, but does not accompany the family members if they leave.
