Ecobreves – CUBA: Insufficient Showers

HAVANA, Oct 20 2007 (IPS) - – The persistent and in some cases torrential rains that thrashed Cuba's eastern provinces in recent weeks do not mean an end to the drought there or other regions of the country — thought they did benefit agriculture. In the eastern province of Guantánamo, although they were intense rains, on average they did not reach 90 millimeters. “The planted fields benefited, but we can't say there isn't any more drought,” Ileana Lynfernal, of the Guantánamo Meteorology Center, told Tierramérica.

Meanwhile, a preliminary report from the Climate Center of the national Weather Institute indicates that there are many parts of the country that continue to suffer a rain deficit.

The recent rainfall is associated with the cyclone season, which lasts from June to November.
