Ecobreves – LATIN AMERICA: Tierramérica Launches International Center

Montevideo, Jul 28 2008 (IPS) - IPS news agency, the United Nations Development Program, United Nations Environment Program and the World Bank on July 31 will celebrate the founding assembly of the Tierramérica International Center for Sustainable Development and Environmental Defense, in the Brazilian Amazon city of Manaus. The Tierramérica Center’s misión includes building alliances and fomenting debate, carrying out joint research and investigations, in Brazil as well as across South American and other regions, in order to strengthen development and environmental sustainability.

The initiative will create a space for linking Brazilian and Latin American knowledge and will maintain communication as one of its pillars, based on the successful experience over more than a decade of Tierramérica, the environmental news service of IPS (Inter Press Service), backed by UNDP, UNEP and the World Bank.

The founding assembly will entail a seminar, “Climate Change, Energy and Food Crises: Challenges of Sustainable Development”, to take place Jul. 31 to Aug. 1 in Manaus, with the participation of the governor of Amazonas state Eduardo Braga, as well as Ricardo Sánchez, director of UNEP for Latin America and the Caribbean, and a video message from Brazil’s former environment minister Marina Silva, among other officials and personalities from Brazil and the region.
