Ecobreves – ARGENTINA: Demands for Potable Water in Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES, Jun 8 2009 (IPS) - In less than a week, some 30,000 people participated in an action to demand potable water for the residents of the Matanza-Riachuelo watershed in Buenos Aires, the country's most polluted waterway. As the highest official of the committee created to clean up the watershed, located in southern Buenos Aires, Environment Secretary Homero Bibiloni received 30,000 demands by e-mail in less than a week.

“The idea is that through this 'web-mobilization' civil society will be more aware of the watershed situation and get involved,” Greenpeace representative Consuelo Bilbao told Tierramérica.

The action was promoted by Greenpeace-Argentina in late May after learning that 10 of 12 water samples collected in the watershed were not apt for human consumption.
