Ecobreves – MEXICO: A Boost to Automotive Efficiency

MEXICO CITY, Oct 4 2010 (IPS) - Four non-governmental organizations in Mexico launched a campaign on vehicle efficiency — with sights on achieving government regulation on the matter. “Although the automotive industry produces increasingly efficient vehicles, they aren't sold in Mexico because neither the law nor the authorities demand it, unlike what happens in the world's principal vehicle markets,” Gerardo Moncada, coordinator of the efficient transportation campaign at the Consumer Power organization, told Tierramérica.

His group promotes the effort in conjunction with the Citizens Council for Sustainable Mobility, C3 Responsible Consumers, and the Mexican Center for Environmental Law.

Because low mileage cars consume more gasoline, they can cost their owners 1,950 to 3,100 dollars more per year to drive, according to the campaign.
