Bloomberg’s Love-Hate Relationship with NYC Press Corps

NEW YORK, Sep 25 2013 (IPS) - Mayor Mike Bloomberg has always had a love-hate relationship with the New York city press corps covering City Hall and municipal politics.

Publicly displaying his annoyance, the usually abrasive billionaire mayor told reporters Thursday: “I’m not going to bother with press conferences (in the future). There’s just no reason to do it,” he said.

Addressing a press briefing at Chelsea Piers, the mayor said: “I think it’s very important that we talk to the public and that we answer the press’ questions. But you just gotta restrict the questions to things that are germane to what our administration is doing.,

Asked why he was angry with the city’s press corps, Bloomberg said: “Ï am not, but there are so many things that are important, and to ask things that I have no knowledge about, or shouldn’t be commenting about is a shame, because the public really does need to know about, for example, the [air quality] announcement today.”

Having been instrumental in banning smoking in public places in New York city, Bloomberg said he had made the city’s air “breathable.”

One of his primary missions is to improve the quality of life in New York city. Asked to comment on reports about the exodus of New Yorkers to the suburbs, he responded sarcastically: “When they vote with their feet, which direction do they go?”

The mayor, who is estimated to be worth more than $34 billion, owns about 88 percent of Bloomberg LP, and won three consecutive terms in office.
