Ecobreves – CHILE: Kids Protect Ozone Layer

SANTIAGO, Aug 11 2007 (IPS) - Through the end of August, children in the fifth and sixth grades at schools in Chile's Tarapacá (north), Metropolitan (central) and Magallanes (south) regions can participate in a painting contest titled “I protect the ozone layer.” The contest, organized by the National Environmental Commission (CONAMA), is part of its campaign “The ozone layer is fragile – Protect it”, to raise awareness about Chile's 2006 Ozone Act.

“Children are curious and are excellent at monitoring. We want to invite them to research the issue and to tell Mom not to buy a refrigerator that contains CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), or that when a technician comes to the house they tell him that he can't release the gases into the environment,” Claudia Paratori, coordinator of CONAMA's ozone program, told Tierramérica.
