Ecobreves – HONDURAS: IFAD Funding for Food Security Programmes

TEGUCIGALPA, Apr 25 2011 (IPS) - The government of Honduras will receive 37 million dollars from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for sustainable agriculture and food security projects that will benefit 40,000 families in 64 poor municipalities. The are 20 beneficiary municipalities in the central department of Francisco Morazán, 22 in the southern departments of Choluteca and Valle, 13 in the southern department El Paraíso, and six in the southwestern department of La Paz, Agriculture Minister Jacobo Regalado told Tierramérica.

The goal is to help poor families in these municipalities develop sustainable agriculture and commerce initiatives that will contribute to food security, in addition to training communities in risk reduction and disaster prevention to deal with the effects of climate change.

The resources provided by IFAD will be administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
