Ecobreves – MEXICO: Warning to Real Estate Investors

MEXICO CITY, Dec 8 2007 (IPS) - If legal actions against the Paraíso del Mar real estate project are successful, those who invested in the western Mexican state of Baja California enterprise will lose a lot of money. That is the view of Pablo Uribe, representative of the non-governmental Mexican Environmental Law Center, which filed a lawsuit against the project for alleged legal violations related to the destruction of a mangrove forest, habitat of 14 types of migratory birds, and impacts on the whale shark and dolphin population.

But the company behind the real estate project is conducting an intense public relations and sales campaign in Canada and the United States, and within Mexico, saying it is one of the “greenest” tourism projects in the area.

Paraíso del Mar, authorized by the government in 2004 and with construction already begun, is to have 1,050 hotel rooms, 1,000 housing plots and a golf course.
