BUENOS AIRES, Jun 30 2008 (IPS) - The vulnerabilities of the Southern Cone Common Market (Mercosur) to climate change were the subject of debate by meteorologists and environmentalists gathered in the Argentine capital. The First Meeting on Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mercosur studied ways to adapt to the consequences created by the phenomenon, according to Alcira Perlini, coordinator of the Climate Change Commission at Argentina's Foreign Ministry.

The Jun. 25-26 meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Relations ahead of the bloc's presidential summit, to take place July 1 in the northwestern Argentine province of Tucumán.

The participants hope to present their conclusions to the presidents of the Mercosur partners: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, and Venezuela, which is in the process of admission.
