Ecobreves – CENTRAL AMERICA: Honduras and El Salvador Agree on Water Management

TEGUCIGALPA, Sep 29 2008 (IPS) - The governments of Honduras and El Salvador will launch a binational project in 2009 to manage the water resources they share in the Lempa River zone, Karen Zelaya, the Honduran minister of cooperation, told Tierramérica. The initiative is financed by the German government and seeks to raise awareness in the border communities about the importance of protecting the forest and the water resources, as well as promoting eco-tourism and sustainable agriculture projects.

The Lempa River is the longest in Central America, and its basin (18,240 square km) extends through Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
