Ecobreves – BRAZIL: Climate Plan Up for Public Debate

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 27 2008 (IPS) - Citizens and activists have until Oct. 31 to suggest modifications to the National Climate Change Plan proposed by a committee made up of seven government ministries. The draft project under public discussion includes suggestions from the 3rd National Conference on the Environment, held in May of this year.

“This is the time to voice an opinion, so that there aren't criticisms later. It is a broad and multi-sectoral plan” the people should read in order to propose improvements, said Ana Lucia Dolabella, an official with the Environment Ministry. “This will give the plan the greatest legitimacy possible,” she told Tierramérica.

Most of the contributions received so far are about urban transport, energy efficiency and halting deforestation, she said. The approval process is expected to be complete before the world conference on climate change, slated for December in Poland.
