Ecobreves – CUBA: Vaccines for Hurricane-Hit Population

HAVANA, Oct 13 2008 (IPS) - Residents older than one year in the town of Holguín, one of the Cuban provinces hardest hit by Hurricane Ike, began receiving immunizations against leptospirosis with a homeopathic vaccine produced in Cuba. Isabel Fernández, resident of the capital of Holguín, told Tierramérica that she and her family received three doses in a medical office. The Nosolet vaccines is administered in drops, five each dose, and has no counterindications.

René Camacho, a retired journalist, said that in this eastern province they are also immunizing the population considered most at risk, such as those living in flooded areas or people who are working on the reconstruction efforts.

Leptospirosis is caused by a bacteria that is transmitted by animal excrement, such as that of rodents, and even of domestic animals.
