MONTEVIDEO, Oct 27 2008 (IPS) - Possible actions to confront climate change were the focus of United Nations Day, celebrated Oct. 24 with a seminar at the UN University headquarters in Japan. Around the globe there were activities to raise awareness about climate change, aimed at all types of audiences.

Every Oct. 24 the 1945 founding of the United Nations is celebrated. “Climate Change: What We Can Do” is the motto this year, adopted in order to help the global citizenry comprehend the challenges brought by global warming. A variety of activities are being undertaken by UN agencies to confront the phenomenon in its multiple manifestations.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stated that the harm caused by climate change has an impact on human life comparable to war.
