MEXICO CITY, Mar 2 2009 (IPS) - Dozens of cats and dogs that had been rescued from the street and were living in a 60-meter-square apartment in the state of Mexico were brutally killed by a group of hooded men armed with sticks and machetes. “I am asking people to please come forward and adopt the ones that were spared,” Javier Cervantes, the apartment owner, said to Tierramérica, calling the aggressors murderers.

On Feb. 23, the authorities raided Cervantes’ home, after receiving reports of the slaughter.

Only 35 of the 60 animals that lived in the apartment were left. According to neighbors, the rest -both dead and alive- were taken away by the assailants in a truck.

Cervantes admitted that the space was too small, but claimed he had no choice. He also said that some neighbors complained of foul smell and had threatened to attack him if he didn’t leave the place.
