Ecobreves – VENEZUELA: The 10 Commandments of Energy Efficiency

CARACAS, Mar 9 2009 (IPS) - The environmental organization Vitalis called on Venezuelans to adopt an “Energy Efficiency Decalogue” to help mitigate global warming. “Fortunately, around 70 percent of the electricity we consume comes from clean energy sources, thanks to our hydroelectric potential. However, the number of cars we drive is growing (with some four to five million vehicles in circulation), and so are the polluting gases they emit,” Liduvina Valderrama, eco-efficiency director at Vitalis, told Tierramérica. Using natural daylight as much as possible and turning on only those light bulbs that are necessary, replacing incandescent bulbs with fluorescent ones, and taking short hot water showers are some of the recommendations included in the Decalogue presented on Mar. 5, on occasion of the World Sustainable Energy Day.

Also included are recommendations for purchasing, using and maintaining home appliances, and a call to encourage more people to get involved.
