Ecobreves – HONDURAS: Oil Spill Under Control

TEGUCIGALPA, Nov 2 2009 (IPS) - The Honduran authorities were able to control a spill of 150 barrels of fuel, which affected flora and fauna in the Bay of San Lorenzo, on the Pacific coast. The spill occurred when vandals broke through one of the pipes to steal fuel, “but they were stopped, preventing the contamination from reaching the slope that connects to the Gulf of Fonseca,” Manolo Laguardia, expert in hazardous material management, told Tierramérica.

The country’s main fuel distributors operate in the San Lorenzo area and, according to Laguardia, technicians from the Environmental Secretariat (ministry) began investigations and will present a report sometime in the next two weeks.

The San Lorenzo region is set in the heart of the Gulf of Fonseca and is known for its rich biodiversity.
