Ecobreves – HONDURAS: Jesuits Launch Eco-Campaign

TEGUCIGALPA, Apr 26 2010 (IPS) - “Later is too late” is the campaign launched by the Society of Jesus in Honduras, working with various civil society groups, that seeks to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment. Roman Catholic priest Ismael Moreno, leader of the Jesuits in Honduras, justified the initiative with the fact that “never before have we suffered such an intense drought” as a result of climate change and uncontrolled deforestation.

Moreno told Tierramérica that the campaign includes radio and television spots, as well as training programs and reforestation efforts.

The plan's launch took place in the city of El Progreso, in the northern department of Yoro, where the Jesuits are based.

Environmental and citizen groups joined in the initiative in the western region and in Bajo Aguán, in the north, as well as in peripheral neighborhoods of Tegucigalpa.
