- A forest biomass gasification plant to produce electricity in Cocodrilo, a tiny community on Cuba's Isla de la Juventud, would mean considerable savings in fuel and reduce the emissions of greenhouse-effect gases. The energy plant is part of the project “Generation and delivery of renewable energy based on modern energy services” for this southern Cuban municipality, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Project coordinator Ángel Alonso Ojeda told Tierramérica that the soon-to-be-inaugurated complex will replace 75 percent of the fuel for diesel motors that are currently being used to generate electricity for the local population of about 300.
“With the plant in operation, we will save approximately 4,500 liters of gas-oil per month,” said Alonso.
