Ecobreves – MEXICO: The Search for Biofuel Sources

MEXICO, Sep 5 2011 (IPS) - Mexico’s National Institute for Forestry, Agricultural and Livestock Research (INIFAP) is studying different plant species for potential biofuel production. "We need to assess bioenergy potential and develop strains that offer high agro-industrial yields and quality, energy efficiency and sustainability," Alfredo Zamarripa of INIFAP’s Biofuel Research and Innovation Network told Tierramérica.

Since 2007 INIFAP has conducted over 100 experiments in 27 test fields and has finally decided to concentrate on pine nuts, castor oil plants, sweet sorghum, sugar cane and sugar beets.
