Ecobreves – HONDURAS: Prize for La Mosquitia Documentary Film

TEGUCIGALPA, Oct 12 2009 (IPS) - A documentary that collects the multiplicity of sounds and forms of life of La Mosquitia, the Honduran jungle region on the Caribbean coast, has won an award from the Environment Secretariat (ministry) and a private foundation. “The Sounds of La Mosquitia”, which received the National Environmental Prize, is an independent film that promotes cultural and biodiversity recovery in that region, as well as showing the lives of the Tawahka, Misquita, Garífuna and Sumo peoples who live there.

The film's producer and director Javier Maradiaga Melara told Tierramérica that three years ago he proposed telling the story of this region “so that it would not remain forgotten or separate, so that its culture and people are known, and most of all, to document the flora and fauna species in danger of extinction.”

La Mosquitia is considered one of the main nature preserves of the Mesoamerican biological corridor, which extends from southern Mexico through Panama.
