Ecobreves – CUBA: Biogas Plant Begins Operating

HAVANA, Oct 27 2008 (IPS) - A new biogas plant located at the capital's largest dump and with the capacity to process 20 tons of urban waste per day will generate enough electricity to supply 120 fully equipped households. The plant produces methane gas and byproducts that are used as fertilizers. An electrical generator uses the gas as fuel to provide energy to the customers.

Inaugurated on Oct. 20 at the “100th Street dump”, the plant is in the western Havana district of Playa and was financed by the Swiss government.

The Swiss ambassador to Cuba, Bertrand Louis, told Tierramérica that they are making the most of the experiences of a similar project in China, also financed by Switzerland and carried out by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
