Ecobreves – VENEZUELA: Internships Among Lobsters and Turtles

CARACAS, Mar 31 2008 (IPS) - Lobsters, turtles and shellfish will be the subject of study beginning in April as part of the final stretch of the Venezuelan school year, through an internship program at the biology station that Los Roques Science Foundation maintains in the archipelago of the same name in the Caribbean. Students from Los Roques school will take part. “Our first awareness programs were aimed at adult fishers and residents (among a few hundred inhabitants), but it is necessary to go to the young people so that they know what we want to preserve,” Bladimir Rodríguez, the biologist who leads the foundation, told Tierramérica.

Los Roques is a fragile national park, filled with hotels and luxury tourism destination, in part attracted by the wealth of fish and shellfish species found in its waters.
