Ecobreves – HONDURAS: Government Sets Sights on Wind Energy

TEGUCIGALPA, Jun 30 2008 (IPS) - The Honduran government plans to sign a contract at year end with a U.S. company to generate the first 100 megawatts of wind energy in this Central American country, in the southern region of Cerro de Hula. Mesoamerica Energy has been conducting feasibility studies there for the past four years, Ricci Moncada, head of the government's electrical energy agency, told Tierramérica.

The cost of the project is 140 million dollars, financed by private banks. According to Moncada, the government aims to generate environmentally friendly energy, and Mesoamerica Energy is expected to do just that.

The U.S. firm, which has regional partners, plans to set up Latin America's largest wind farm in Honduras, according to its representatives in the country.
