TEGUCIGALPA, Oct 6 2008 (IPS) - In Central America “there are no uniform public policies to ensure that polluting our quality of life is also a matter of corruption and lack of transparency,” said Roxana Salazar, environmentalist and interim judge in Costa Rica's Constitutional Court. “As long as there are no clear public policies, it's easy for them to make us believe that natural disasters are accidental. And that is not true. They are a consequence of how we live,” she told Tierramérica. The state of Central America's environmental policies was part of the debate held by the region's human rights prosecutors Sep. 30 in the Honduran capital.

The gathering, sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission of Honduras, aims to present basic guidelines for a regional environmental policy in early 2009.
