Ecobreves – CUBA: Energy Collaboration in the Caribbean

HAVANA, Dec 8 2008 (IPS) - Eleven countries of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) are benefitting from a program promoted by Cuba for saving energy, the island nation's deputy foreign minister, Alejandro González, said ahead of the regional summit Monday. To date, Cuba has sent some 8.5 million low-energy light bulbs to the Caricom countries. Programs for utilizing these bulbs mean annual savings of more than 274,000 tons of fuel.

The agenda of the Havana summit includes studying the impact of climate change and hurricanes, which are increasingly and intense, González told Tierramérica.

“We will surely continue advancing and deepening Cuba's collaboration with the region on those issues,” he said.
